Stone Point Capital Invests $2.5 Billion in Ardonagh Group

The Ardonagh Group has secured a significant equity investment of US$2.5 billion, led by Stone Point Capital, a private equity firm based in the U.S. This investment values Ardonagh at US$14 billion and positions Stone Point as a major shareholder alongside existing investors such as Madison Dearborn Partners, HPS Investment Partners, and a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

The funds from this investment are earmarked to bolster Ardonagh's long-term growth strategy, particularly in the global property and casualty insurance market. The capital will facilitate both organic growth initiatives and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) across Ardonagh's diverse business platform, which includes wholesale, retail, and specialist distribution operations in various regions.

Additionally, the investment will enhance Ardonagh's technology and data capabilities, with projects like Ardonagh Intelligence aimed at improving operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making. The transaction has also attracted co-investment interest from institutions linked to Stone Point, MDP, and HPS, highlighting the strong investor appetite for the insurance distribution sector.

Founded in 2017 through the merger of several UK insurance firms, Ardonagh has evolved into an international broking group, generating approximately US$18 billion in gross written premiums annually. Its operations cover the entire insurance distribution chain, with a presence in the UK, Europe, the U.S., Asia-Pacific, and other key markets.

This equity raise follows a series of strategic transactions and structural changes in 2024, including the merger of Ardonagh’s personal lines business with Markerstudy in June and the AU$2.3 billion acquisition of Australia’s PSC Insurance Group in October. Throughout the year, Ardonagh completed 68 acquisitions across various markets.

In addition to its acquisition strategy, Ardonagh restructured its capital through refinancing in February 2025 and launched Ardonagh Intelligence in March. This initiative focuses on utilizing machine learning and data enrichment tools to enhance business operations.

Overall, Ardonagh asserts that this latest investment will improve its financial flexibility, enabling the company to scale its existing operations and explore new market opportunities. With Stone Point joining a consortium of institutional investors, Ardonagh is well-positioned to pursue its growth ambitions in the insurance sector.
